the female gaze

Look with your eyes, not with your hands.

Such a minute fraction of this life do we live: so much is sleep, tooth-brushing, waiting for mail, for metamorphosis, for those sudden moments of incandescence: unexpected, but once one knows them, one can live life in the light of their past and the hope of their future.

A grad student muses on her life, film, friends, politics, reality televizzle, and music.

So many people have already asked, I feel compelled to follow up the events of the smoochin' advisor. Thankfully, her office has a small "pronaos" (spare the Classical temple vocab) so you pass from one door, through a small area into another door and the office. So I announced my presence with a knock and actually caught them standing near her bookshelves and standing embracingly (and scandalously) close. Then I quickly retreated down the hall to shoot the shit with Kalb and just avoid the entire situation. She came and found me a few mins later, telling me her new boyfriend stopped by to surprise her and say hi. I resisted the urge to vomit on the floor or to make some vulgar comment.

My friend Andrew left today for Stanford to go to the Russia conference I went to last year. I am actually pretty jealous because another friend, Nate Young at Northwestern is also going, I wish I could go back and do it again. It's a week long conference bringing together young leaders from the US and Russia, talking about community service projects, leadership, and foreign relations between the two states. I enjoyed myself and met a lot of people I have since seen at Worlds , including my friend Oleyssa and another friend Masha who is studying at Wesleyan for the year. My conference focused on missile defense, I assume that this year's is going to take up questions about 9/11, but it still includes a few lecturing former senators, presidental aids, a fancy dinner in San Fran, and a trip to the beach - who could pass that up?
