my life on the lower east side
stream of consciousness on housesitting in an area that can only be described as a college quad for adults or perhaps a Soviet fortress-like tenement in Moscow. Discovered the best new cd I've heard in about a year, Norah Jones "Come Away With Me," sure it sounds like being stuck in Pottery Barn, but as Nathan aptly noted, "leave that cd on, everything's okay when it's on." So I barely survived my own intern party and the after brawl. Spent Saturday staggering through Central Park and giggling through the Met when my patience and composure abandonned me. Trips out to Brooklyn, to Greenwich - providing the best new memory of 1-95 of climbing in an old pickup truck window after my brilliant solution to prevent the precious cargo (a futon and rugs) from killing a mini van full of Jersey vacationers on the BQE. But I'm conquering a new borrough and earning some serious brownie points for when I eventually move to this city and need furniture lugged up stairs or constructed.
Successfully quit biting my nails, I guess it's sort of my New Year's resolution as my next New Year is creeping (hint, hint). Learned that the New York Public Library is the most opulent and bureaucratic place I've ever done research. Going back tomorrow to wade further into the waters. Had to turn down a tempting and generous invitation to Ars Electronica because I am still a student lacking the means and time to go to Linz.
This might be the new social apex of the summer... having my "French" soiree tomorrow for John and Lauren. Greeting Yoshi this weekend and going back to the old stomping ground of the elegant Roger Williams. Things are actually very very good... and being here (in the City for a continious stream of 24 hour days) actually feels a little like a vacation with a calendar inked with good plans. I've been academically lazy and shut off from the world ala the New York Times. Somehow I know however, that the news will still be new when I get back to Ossining.
