I can't stand people who seem to advocate personal responsibility or refuse to recognize that their actions can negatively impact other people. I know college is a selfish time of life, but if you knew the degree to which this year's debate crew avoids emails, forgets to answer the phone, commicate their intention to come (or not to come) on a debate trip - and that all of this happens in the somewhat nebulous and over-stressed atmosphere between Dan O'Shea and I... this is perhaps the worst it's ever been. I am ready to snap and it's only week 3, but in a larger sense, it's year five for all intents and purposes and people are still struggling with the basic lessons and behaviors that ought to be expected of all productively-minded and responsible adults.
Word of advice - in dealing with me until this week or maybe the next two weeks blow over - you better not re-neg on any promises, bring to light any grave dissappointments when it's too late to do anything about them, or fuck with my schedule any more than it's already loaded and fucked to begin with. I need to vent and this seems like the least hurtful place to direct it at anyone in particular. But you'd think offering people a free trip to Harvard, nice dinners, a posh hotel room and good company - well, you'd think people would at least respond with the decency of replying to an email, perhaps the laziest act and form of communication ever invented. Perhaps a good question to ask at MIT on Monday - what good is email and instanteous communication if no one uses it? Why don't we just stick to the old horse-carried post routes if people are going to lag and delay their responses.
On a much dirtier note - I tried to load toner into a copy machine today and failed miserably. I pulled out the strip and the locking mechanism failed to lock properly. Amazingly, I didn't get any on me, but it did require lots of work with a vacuum and a static-cloth. Is toner toxic? Well, I am sure I have black lung. Remind me of this next week when my snot still resembles chimney soot.
