the female gaze

Look with your eyes, not with your hands.

Such a minute fraction of this life do we live: so much is sleep, tooth-brushing, waiting for mail, for metamorphosis, for those sudden moments of incandescence: unexpected, but once one knows them, one can live life in the light of their past and the hope of their future.

A grad student muses on her life, film, friends, politics, reality televizzle, and music.

it's all about the sunsets

In my poli sci review session tonight - my teacher reminded us to stop and enjoy the magnificent sunsets and not to sweat too much over tomorrow morning's looming exam or exams in general. Of course the review session was merciiess, I've been feverish (not in the stressed sense, in the under the weather sense) and prone to sleeping in quiet chairs around all campus today, and now doing one final lap around my notes before hitting the sheets. the coffeemaker is set to go off early and much like the advice of one of my presidency readings - I am hoping to get off to a "running start" and knock down tomorrow's exam. Confidence is hinged upon rest and less of a fever tomorrow.

So following the advice of my professor... let's just pause for a sunset and some poetry before then - and a little prufrock to get me through the night.

And would it have been worth it, after all,
Would it have been worth while,
After the sunsets and the dooryards and the sprinkled streets,
After the novels, after the teacups, after the skirts that trail along the floor --
And this, and so much more?--
It is impossible to say just what I mean!
But as if a magic lantern threw the nerves in patterns on a screen:
Would it have been worth while
If one, settling a pillow or throwing off a shawl,
And turning toward the window, should say:
"That is not it at all,
That is not what I meant, at all."
