Seven-Fiddy
Working is very numerical - number of hours, hourly rate of pay, 15 min breaks, exchange of bling bling for loot. It is even stranger working in retail. All day, people give you money for clothes. The company gives you money for accepting other people's money. Then, you use your money to buy clothes... I feel like I should get paid in polos and modern bootcut stretch jeans... oh wait, by this logic, I do. I feel like I am encountering more
math and numbers than the first trimester of my retirement. Today was a pretty solid day. I am already more comfortable with the registers and the daily going ons. I worked 9-6 today and I am in for a doosey 7am-3pm tomorrow to account for an inspection / visit from the regional manager who covers the entire east coast. That being said, and I need to get up about eight hours earlier than usual, I am going to be skeedaddling off to bed soon... but before that, let's check in with the only reality I know, that of television.
Good American Idol tonight - well, I'll qualify that, good theme: the Billy Joel canon. I like Billy Joel and I think his songbook has enough range to really show off the talents of the slightly less than magnificent seven that remain. If Carmen Rasmussen DOESN'T go tomorrow, I might have to stop watching because it is obviously slanted to reflect the influence of the mormon mafia backing her up week in and week out. I feel like she wasn't trying tonight - she put on the nastiest / strangest slimy green satin outfit, stood still, and went out of her way to incorporate sharp notes and sour pitches. She was so bad tonight. Her partner in crime, Kimberly Caldwell wouldn't be missed either - and although her performance was lousy and subpar, it wasn't an offensive affront to the Idol franchise and the American viewing audience. Ruben is great and he's going to make a fantastic winner, it is abudantly clear that this contest has ended, Roooobin is clearly, in Randy's words, "top dawg." I am bored with Clay, his performance is identical week in and week out, only he gets less charming each week. He went from geek chic to just average looking - I think he's lost his twinkle and he's lost my undying support. I think my sister's beloved Josh Gracin did a very good job with "Piano Man," he made it his own and I am sure he got her to vote 21 million times in support of his boyish good looks. Other standouts from the night - the dark horse, Kimberely Locke. Tonight was her night and I hope she sticks around, as her rendition of "New York State of Mind" (a favorite of mine, although it was disparaged on Sex and the City) was really one of her shining moments. She looked better than ever and she owned this song as much as she does "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." She and Ruben got my votes tonight, no one else was really worth the finger dexterity.
Although I am falling behind, I finally watched last week's Survivor tonight - the one where the alpha female, Deena, got the boot. Good episode, I especially liked that Heidi mentioned that she brings "intelligence and athleticism" to the tribe - mind you, this is a 90lb gym teacher from Missouri with Green Giant-sized rack, and who spells
Deena -
Denna. Sound it out, idiot. I don't know how many of you are following this season, but I will say, and this is after a little time away from the series (not having watched Thailand or much of Marquesas) this is the best one yet. This season really proves that no one is smarter than the game. Week to week, I am constantly surprised by who gets kicked off - we've had a few HUGE surprises. I really thought Deena was in it for longer than the half-way point. I was so certain that I had her on my fantasy team and her exorcism cost me 20 points - I know this doesn't mean anything to anyone, but I really pegged the next sitting duck as creepy Matthew, stodgy Butch, or hairy-armpitted Christy. Go figure, and she was asking for it. There were some very entertaining moments in this week's show - especially at the beginning when Rob was leading Matt along and feeding him lies with the spy music in the background - nice touch CBS, very nice. But generally speaking, there is much more alliance shifting and turning on one another much sooner than we've seen in seasons past. I am enjoying it a great deal. I have no predictions about who is going this week - but I think Rob's strategy should be to join up with the aforementioned trio and dump Alex, Jenna, and Heidi. I think he'll get further with the rag-tag group than with the pretty youngins. I'll stop myself here because I know that Kristin and Jack are the only two people who read this and care about Surivivor... that, and I am overdue to hit the sheets. You'd be surprised how physically exhaustive this job is and how quickly 6am will come.
My sister comes home tomorrow for her Easter Break, something we wishy washy religious Midd kids never once got. Just the same, I never had to call my Professor "Father" and I never got lectured by a priest for going out and partying too much. Oh yeah, that and I got to mingle with boys after 11pm. Even though I spent most Easters hungover in my dorm room, I have reason to believe that she got the short end of the schtick. Just the same, I am glad she's coming home. We can watch Survivor together and hopefully see the latest installment in the Christopher Guest oeuvre,
The Mighty Wind. Ah, that's
raison d'aperitif.
