the female gaze

Look with your eyes, not with your hands.

Such a minute fraction of this life do we live: so much is sleep, tooth-brushing, waiting for mail, for metamorphosis, for those sudden moments of incandescence: unexpected, but once one knows them, one can live life in the light of their past and the hope of their future.

Breakfast of Champions

If you are anything like me, then you will openly admit that it can be worthwhile to start the occasional morning at 12:45pm over a bowl of sugary delicious Froot Loops. The finest of the junky cereals, these were a cornerstone of my childhood and it's nice to reminisce, even if it means flirting with cavities. If you are more reminded that horrified by this admission, cast your vote for a new color, here, yes the URL is actually www.toucansam.com. I am taking a much needed lazy day after driving around, hawking denim to strangers, finding little recourse in a so-called social life, and having all of my television programs come to an end without caring as much as I thought I would. Yes, folks, I now see the light at the end of the tunnel and it doesn't involve escaping into tv-realities with as much enthusiasm or fervor. Proof that life continues in my absence. I finally touched base with some soon to reunited with Middlebury friends, let's just say that I was surprised to hear about everything that has been happening and senior week is more needed than I thought. Three days and counting till I go back to the mountains. Less time until I am back in dirty old New York and finally getting to see Matthew Barney.

The hot topic of the day isn't really hot, it's more lukewarm and expected. KLo got the boot last night. She was a real underdog and if she pulled through to the top two, I am sure there would have been calls for recounts and voting fraud. Last night the video montage of the trip home really cemented the notion that Clay and Ruben incite Beatles-like pandemonium, and Kim just draws big crowds for autographs. As Simon is fond of saying, I think America got it right and picked the top two Idols. As for the winner, I don't think it is a very big deal. I think both (even Kim, all these) are going to have long careers and I think now it's just the question of who gets Simon Fuller as puppetmaster and who gets to choose a Producer more in-tune with his style and musical audiences. Now, I almost think that losing will create the bigger winner in the end - allow someone to grow as an artist without the persistent Idol tag and what have you. Most resounding thought from last night's show - please, please, please, put SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW to rest. As I see it, KLo owns the modern rendition of that song. She performed it too many times on the show, at least three times by my count, and I don't think Tamyra had any right to come on Kim's stage last night and sing it. For starters, I'll grant that it is as a good song, but I would like to point out that there are literally millions of other songs out there worth performing. Secondly, Justin Guarini, what was the point in singing Unchained Melody when Clay was there 24 hours prior and sang the pants off of you (Clay, wishes, huh?). I think the one thing that was abundantly clear last night was that this year, the contestants can sang, and last year, they couldn't. I was an avid Tamyra fan last year, but I think she was way out of line singing a half-ass rendition of Kim's anthem. I think Justin finished as number two last year because the teenies had no one else to direct their crushes to and last night proved that he wouldn't have stayed in the top ten any longer than Charles "Hatty" Grigsby or Corey "Boom Boom" Clark this year. I actually think that Justin's R&B single was pretty hot and catchy and I have no idea why he wanted to step out of that comfort commercial zone and look so pitiful compared to Clay. So, last night, although Kim was selected to go, the big loserz were Tamyra and Justin, obviously out-classed by this year's contingent.
