Joshy Washy
Before I call it a night, now having watched about eight hours of delicious programming, let's just have a Josh-closure moment. I think things turned out correctly on Idol tonight when the time came for the good old boy to go from Diesel to desert boots. This final four is tough stuff - I honestly went in not knowing how the whole thing would end, still don't. I think the logical thing to happen is that Kim goes next week and we get to see Ruben and Clay charm the pants of America to pick Idol II. I have no idea who is going to win that contest.
On that note - let's talk about criteria here for a minute because it seemed to be a theme running through my programming choices tonight. Largely because my co-workers discuss it and I don't like to be out of the loop, I've taken up to watching the Bachelor from time to time. Like Survivor or Idol, every week a "contestant" has to leave this show too. Tonight we were down to three ladies and our hunky Firestone took them each away on a romantic vacation - each of which ended in a more
naughty than nice coed sleepover. The point here being - what is the criteria then going into deciding who goes and who stays? Like everything else, this show and so many others like it, come down to pure and simple, good old subjective personal preference. So what is the criteria going into the final days of Idol - I mean, you couldn't ask to rank a more different group - between Kim, Clay, and Rubes. Even when someone has a good night, you always want to follow it up - she looked her best, or that was good for him... so you evaluate each contestant against past performances, but then you still like one better than another, and presumably you vote. This is rambling and I forget the point I was trying to make here, distracted by AIM, but growing up you are expected to think that "playing favorites" is somehow dishonest or unfair - when really, meritocracies don't exist (except for maybe the PSATs where scholarships are awarded on blind scores) but in every other situation I have ever encountered, it all comes down to a snap judgmental decision - putting everything else aside, you go with your gut and you pick whomever you like best and likely disregard all important criteria.
