the female gaze

Look with your eyes, not with your hands.

Such a minute fraction of this life do we live: so much is sleep, tooth-brushing, waiting for mail, for metamorphosis, for those sudden moments of incandescence: unexpected, but once one knows them, one can live life in the light of their past and the hope of their future.

A grad student muses on her life, film, friends, politics, reality televizzle, and music.

Brrr... It's Cold in Here

Fall tends to ease in gradually on the East Coast, whereas, it seems to descend instantly and without warning here in Midwesterland. Granted the weather is calling for 70 degrees and sunny for tomorrow, but it is clearly jacket weather and time to break out the blankets.

Today has the making of a great Friday. I taught this morning and spent half of the class doing a fun delivery exercise. I had my students read popular song lyrics and make eye contact while speaking. We had fun, laughed a lot, and I enjoyed myself. We've needed a day like this for a while to really break up the monotony of lessons and book-work. I made a point of escaping Vilas Hall (the no-windows thing and the long days are starting to beat me down) as soon as I possibly could. I made a dash for Eric's couch and we caught up on two new episodes of Sex and the City. What a treat, a whole hour of previously unseen SATC.

Then, I came home to the biggest and best surprise of all - the fix-it guy came and rigged me up with a new phone jack. Now I have a local phone number (so I don't have to deal with my statically cell service) and also dial-up Internet. Sure, dial-up leaves something to be desired for downloading, but it means I have email and blogging capabilities at home. I was just starting to enjoy the productivity of not having cable or Internet at home. Lately, I have amazed myself with my ability to stay on task and get my reading done early. That's all going to change, but I love having regular communication back in my life. I no longer feel like I live in a third world country. Despite the static of using a TV antenna, I did watch the new Survivor last night and it was such a treat.

Tonight holds good promise. One of my new gal pals is coming over for dinner. We're cooking something veggie-a-licious and then going to see another Dorothy Arzner film in the Cinemateque series. Afterward, there is some kind of film-kid troupe going dancing. I've never been the dancing / club type, but maybe a rogue group will opt for drinking in a less-dancy locale. Just the same, I am thrilled that it's Friday and to have a day away from school having more fun than I usually do.
