On the Move...
Nomadic study habits suit me best. I spent the bulk of the day camped out in my office with another colleague, Dave, who also can't
get his work on at home. If nothing else, I've made my documentary study guide and chipped away at the narrative book (which, sigh, I still probably won't finish tonight). Now, after stopping off to hear Presidential-hopeful Howard Dean speak at an outdoor rally, I have ping-ponged to the 7th floor of Memorial Library (my new favorite bunker to hide in). I still really haven't done any reading for the week - too consumed with a test and a paper to get through the weekly syllabus... but alas, the night is young!
I got through all of my grading last night (left the office at 2am) and walked home along the scary, undergrad-filthy streets as the bars purged out frat boys in Wisconsin T-shirts and scantily dressed hoes. At the very least my long night in the office was productive: I started to rebuild my Mp3 collection and tried to get the computer back up and running with some basic software applications. I can't get the modem to initialize, so still no Internet at home. But the internet is a distraction and I am better not to have it. And until my student makes good on his promise to hook me up with Microsoft Office, I don't even have Word on my computer - yeah, it's an expensive, useless, keyboard / screen at this point.
Time to make the walk up State Street and settle in for a night of manic productivity. Thankfully, I've had a few bursts of manic energy this weekend, otherwise I never would have never washed all of the dishes in the sink, scrubbed my bathroom, or gotten through as much schoolwork as I have. With the gads of **free time** I don't have, I've tried to put one eye toward my future career as a reputable film scholarly-type. I still need to write out my letter of interest for the Berlin festival (holding off until I get some advice from a professor this week) and I volunteered to write a book review of a book on Andy Warhol's film
Blowjob for a journal called
International Film Journal (it's published in Sweden). You get a free book out of the deal and I really need to start doing something productive like getting my name around or some publications on the old CV. I am not really ready to deliver / submit whole papers yet, but this seems like a good plan. When I try to tack another thing on top of an already-full load, I'll probably hate myself, but it's easy to be optimistic when it just involves agreeing to do something (it's the doing part that's so hard). I am sure I'll complain later, just planting the seeds for a rant.
Later skaters... time to go home after what already feels like a long day.
