Too Many Birthdays, Too Many Vaginas
This is a weekend of extravagance. Last night, I dutifully went to support my friend Laura in her stage debut of the Vagina Monologues. She did a wonderful job, but I am issuing a proclamation from here-on out - NO MORE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, EVER! Every year is seems that a gal pal wants to try out her acting skills and try out for this play. So, between the HBO performance and this "supportive friend in the audience" song and dance routine, I've seen these at least five times. With that, I announce my retirement and vow never to see them again. Note to all friends who hold grudges, please understand why I'd rather buy you a drink to celebrate your empowered vagina but refuse to ever see the show again.
Keeping with the theme of supporting friends in new artistic endeavors, we then made our way to see Kat, a dissertator, in her debut as a lead guitar for the band, the motorprimitives (they have a website, check them out). The show was in a terrible dive bar in a crappy part of time - but Kat rocked out, and it was fun. When the show ended, Jordis and I were itching to return to our neck of the woods. Fearing that we were stranded, we were glad to hitch a ride back with another film student headed toward home. Then, I ended up having a wonderful evening. We met Tom, Eric, and Patrick (my production lecturer, whom I adore) for a drink at a lounge-y bar. Just enough variety from the norm to be refreshingly fun. From there, we ended the night at what is becoming the best place to end the night - a cigar bar around the corner from my apartment. I was sad to see the night end as soon as it did...
Anyway... so too much birthday, or rather, too many birthdays. In order to kill a flock of birds with a singe stone, we are having a "five person" birthday party tonight - for five recently more-aged filmies. Buying cards was a very involved process. In the end, I think it'll be a lot of fun, but I don't know how a group this size can maneuver around the relatively cramped Madison bar scene. It should be a good time and it's the first time since the early fall the entire department is turning out for a single event. Granted, it's Valentine's Day, but the department couples were willing to forgo the Hallmark holiday for loftier things. As the party, or the getting ready process, is rapidly approaching, I need to type up my Midd Alumni interview evaluations and read some Bazin before the whole night is swallowed by good cheer, birthdays, and an influx of friends from all over.
