the female gaze

Look with your eyes, not with your hands.

Such a minute fraction of this life do we live: so much is sleep, tooth-brushing, waiting for mail, for metamorphosis, for those sudden moments of incandescence: unexpected, but once one knows them, one can live life in the light of their past and the hope of their future.

A grad student muses on her life, film, friends, politics, reality televizzle, and music.

Chicken and Waffles

There is a (in)famous LA-eatery called Someone or other's "Chicken and Waffles," and while I've never eaten their fare, I had chicken for dinner last night and waffles this morning, for what it's worth, I think there's some unintended coincidence there.

Now it's approaching Sunday afternoon and I don't have much to show for the weekend, which is becoming all to common a refrain as my lazy summer slips on. In anticipation of our two-month anniversary, on Friday night, Patrick and I went out on a "real date," dinner at a classy seafood restaurant near the Capitol and then out for a few drinks at the swank, Magnus. Yesterday morning I went to the Farmers'' Market (lots of good stuff - tomatoes, asparagus, spicy cilantro pesto...) and then did the weekly grocery shopping, but aside from getting sucked into MTV's Newlyweds marathon and doing some laundry, it wasn't much of a day. I guess on the good side I have been making progress on the long-overdue Kiarostami book review and I have a binder's worth of information to read about the Overture Center (my new day job as a PR-ista), but without real structure, I've essentially lost the ability to be self-starting and productive. The worst things about these slumps, it's hard to have the gumption to pick yourself out of laziness...

Hopefully this week will bring changing tides. I finally have an office to report to. I have an orientation for my Hollywood Class. The good thing about going in is that it will force me to really get moving. I've been watching movies and getting ideas, but it's not like I've written a lecture or even planned the films I'll screen. That starts on the 28th, so between now and then, let's pray that my work ethic changes.

The exciting part of the week will be on Thursday when my sister arrives. She's coming into town for a visit and I couldn't be happier. She's actually be here over her birthday, so we have an official thing to celebrate. As of now, aside from some typical tours and introductions, we're planning on spending Friday in the Windy City. We're going to go to the Museum of Contemporary Art, eat pizza at Gino's East, and then shop and admire "tall buildings." One of our many planned stops will be to visit CB2 (www.cb2.com) which is a younger & hipper Crate and Barrel. Kristin has never been to Chicago / Madison, so she should be easily entertained. I've already threatened her that she needs to try a Cheese Curd at the Farmers' Market... I can't say that it's necessarily a good taste, but it is unique and it's something that Midwesterners fawn over. Otherwise, Kristin and I will probably do our usual sort of thing - see a movie (Saved!), get some ice cream (Coldstone Creamery), and eat some chicken parm in her honor.

My plans for today aren't so great... get dressed, watch either Kiarostami's The Wind Will Carry Us or another 1940s movie, and then go over to Patrick's for the ginger-soy-sesame asparagus I love, salmon, and the Lakers.
