the female gaze

Look with your eyes, not with your hands.

Such a minute fraction of this life do we live: so much is sleep, tooth-brushing, waiting for mail, for metamorphosis, for those sudden moments of incandescence: unexpected, but once one knows them, one can live life in the light of their past and the hope of their future.

A grad student muses on her life, film, friends, politics, reality televizzle, and music.

Laying around so much my back hurts...

I am embarrassed to say that my back actually hurts from sleeping too much, sitting at a desk occasionally doing a modicum of research on Hollywood in the 1940s, or watching movies in the seated position. Without a real sense of routine or a stable work ethic my blogging habits, like just about everything else, is without definitive, distinctive shape.

One of the big highlights of the week is that I secured a new, wonderful apartment. The trade of taking on a roommate (Mark, an incoming student and Oberlin grad) seems well worth it. The apartment is very open and spacious and well-maintained. All hard-wood. It's sort of retro / modern and looks like a Frank Llyod Wright house with a open and flowy floorplan to match. I feel confident in saying that it's the best apartment in Madison. Especially considering my price range, I am elated with the place. All out of town visitors are welcome anytime after August 15th. My other big project of the week was to find a summer job. I had a very promising interview on Wednesday and they were checking my references on Friday - with any luck - that'll materialize soon. Otherwise, I start scrambling because I need to get paid.

Patrick got back from LA and I've been mildly more productive since he returned. I've watched a few movies this week - including His Girl Friday, The Lady Eve, and The Third Man. I am on a serious Cary Grant kick on account of TCM, but good stuff all around. He really might be my favorite movie star. Yesterday, at long last, I saw the first two Lord of the Rings movies. Kristin was screening 35 prints on campus anyway, so I watched them. The third is definitely the best and I made it through the other two successfully. I maintain that these aren't "my kind" of movies and I would likely detest the books, but as a film person, it's still pretty shameful that I didn't see them until now. Strangely, I think I really sympathized with Viggo Mortenson's character more than I expected to. I also really like the dynamic between Orlando Bloom and the dwarf. In general, I am an Orlando fan... even though I probably won't see Troy.

Friday night was fun. We went out for pizza for what is becoming the typical Com Arts birthday joint in honor of Frome's 31. Nice turn out and I got to see several people I haven't seen since coming back from LA - lots to discuss and reune about. Afterward we went to this sort of middle-eastern bar where we sat Indian-style in a curtain & velour pillowed booth, sipped cocktails and had fun.

Tonight will be spent making pizza with Farmer's Market fresh ingredients and Patrick's nifty pizza stone and watching the Lakers in the first game of the NBA finals, a nice evening in. We've been cooking other new things lately - including a shrimp / noodle stir-fry that was very successful. I also got some amazing tomatoes at the Farmer's Market and I've been eating my favorite summer sandwich (the BLT) like it's going out of style, not that it ever could. I've also finished my summer herb garden, adding tall and healthy mint, basil, cilantro, and parsley plants to the window sill.
